چکیده

The progress in the cytogenetics of sugarcane with special reference to researches during the last decade is reviewed. Standardisation of leaf squash, pollen grain squash and root t ip squash methods for chromosome study have been reported. Culturing of pollen grains and cells in vitro have been new additions. The basic chromosome number of Saccharum may be 5, 6, 8 and 10. A new line of investigation, i.e., study of chromosome morphology in several clones of Saccharum species, has been reported. The interspecific and intergeneric hybrids and nature of their chromosome constitution have been investigated. The Saccharum X Zea hybrid has been shown to be a genuine one. Recent data on the nature of pollen sterility in S. officinarum clones has shown that it may be genic. Critical meiotic studies have shown perfect pachytene pairing i n Narenga X Sclerostachya hybrids and colchicine induced polyploids of S. spontaneum. A recent view of Bremer tends to support Parthasarathy's hypothesis that S. barberi developed as a result of hybridisation between S. spontaneum and S. officinarum.

Impact of Pathogen Genetics on Breeding for Resistance to Sugarcane Diseases

DISEASES ARE LIMITING factors of sugarcane production and breeding for resistance to diseases is a major goal in sugarcane variety improvement. Diseases result from complex interactions between plants, pathogens and environment, including humans and insect vectors of pathogens. History has shown that durability of resistance of sugarcane to diseases varies according to the host cultivar and to ...

Genetic Diversity Analysis of Sugarcane Parents in Chinese Breeding Programmes Using gSSR Markers

Sugarcane is the most important sugar and bioenergy crop in the world. The selection and combination of parents for crossing rely on an understanding of their genetic structures and molecular diversity. In the present study, 115 sugarcane genotypes used for parental crossing were genotyped based on five genomic simple sequence repeat marker (gSSR) loci and 88 polymorphic alleles of loci (100%) ...

Breeding and Genetics SOME CURRENT ISSUES IN POPULATION GENETICS IN RELATION T O SUGARCANE BREEDING A

Four topics in modern population biology, namely, genetic architecture, stability, diversity and allozyme flexibility, are discussed in relation to sugarcane breeding. It is argued that research on the following points is likely to improve sugarcane breeding: 1) Repeated cycles of intercrossing and selection of different modes can be specifically designed to elucidate the genetic architecture o...

Selection index using the graphical area applied to sugarcane breeding.

This study aimed to develop a multivariate selection index based on the graphical area of a polygon formed by standardized values, also known as radar chart. This methodology may be used to assist selection of superior genotypes in sugarcane breeding programs. Seven technological traits in 37 sugarcane genotypes were evaluated. An area index (AI) was constructed and the resulting polygon areas ...

DNA profiling of sugarcane genotypes using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA.

DNA profiles of 40 sugarcane genotypes were constructed with 30 RAPD markers. Sugarcane genotypes of both Saccharum officinarum and S. barberi were included in this study. Multiple alleles were detected from each RAPD; there was a high level of polymorphism. On average, 7.93 alleles were produced per primer, giving a total of 238 alleles. The genetic distances between these genotypes were asses...
